Arthritis - the facts
 About 8.5 million people in the UK have arthritis and it generally affects those over 50 years old. By 65 years old, 50% of people have some arthritis - often mild - but 10% of people over 65 years old have a major disability because of arthritis. It’s the most common long-term condition in the UK and the vast majority of those affected live in constant pain and find it hard to perform everyday tasks.
Symptoms:
Pain, stiffness and limitation of full movement of the joint are all symptoms of arthritis. Stiffness is worst in the morning and loosens up after an hour or so. Swelling and inflammation of the joint can occur and affected joints may look larger than normal due to overgrowth of the bone. If a knee/hip is badly affected you may be finding it difficult to get about.
People with arthritis are more likely to suffer from disturbed sleep or insomnia and some report feeling anxious and depressed.
